John Charles Thomas, 93, of Indianapolis, passed away on March 22, 2018. He was born on September 21, 1924 in Indianapolis to John Gabriel and Lucy (Cross) Thomas.
From 1943 to 1945, during World War II, John was in the Army Corps of Engineering in France and Germany.
John was a 1948 graduate of Butler University in Business and was also a proud member of Purdue University’s First Varsity Glee Club.
In 1950 he married the love of his life Phyllis. They would enjoy wonderful memories of their happy 65 years of marriage.
From 1965 to 1972, he was Scoutmaster of Troop 19 at Downey Avenue Christian Church. John had the most Eagle Scouts in troop’s fifty-five year history. In 1972, Scoutmaster John Thomas and Eagle Scouts survived a seven day, 150-mile Wilderness Canoe Trip in the Boundary Waters of Canada, which was a life changing experience.
The John C. Thomas family received the USTA Midwest Tennis Family of The Year Award in 1975 during the award ceremony at the U.S. Clay Courts in Indianapolis.
He was a devoted and loving husband and father.
He is preceded in death by his wife Phyllis (Wear) Thomas in 2015 and son Mark Stephen Thomas in 1976.
He is survived by his children Paul M. Thomas, John David Thomas, and Cynthia Hicks and his 8 grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be held on Friday, March 30, 2018 at 11 am at Indiana Funeral Care, 8151 Allisonville Road with visitation from 9 am until the time of service. Burial will follow at Washington Park East.
